It's amazing what a simple haircut can do to your spirits. A flick here, a layer there and suddenly you look and feel so transformed.
Hello new me! Where have you been hiding? It's nice the way your hair bounces off the wind now.
When it comes to dressing well, I've always been the lazy pig in the family. A dirty old pair of jeans, a crumpled t-shirt or kurti and my sneakers, and I'm set for any occasion or destination. And if by negligence, my denims find their way into the laundry, my super practical and comfortable shorts always come to the rescue.
But then I have days when a simple haircut makes me want to renew interest in life. I wonder if that's the case with other women too?
I suppose it needs serious commitment, this looking good business. I've known women who'd work, study, practice yoga, cook, clean and still manage to look like they've just stepped out of the salon. My stubby ink stained nails looked ghastly next to their ridiculously manicured talons. And as much as I've tried to take inspiration from them and give a makeover to myself and my lifestyle (countless times over the years), I've come to realize that it's simply not me. And I simply do not have the time nor the inclination to indulge in fashion fetishes of any kind.
Which kinda made me make up my own style guide. If pyjamas make you feel good, I say pick the softest one in the brightest shade. If it's that beaded necklace you crave for, buy it without wasting any time or opinion. If you love t-shirts, make sure they say something stupid or wild or even offensive. It's important to look good. But more importantly, it's necessary to look good in something that makes you feel like...well, you.
And just in case you feel like something's still missing, go for that haircut. Surrender your head of hair to a know-it-all stylist. Trust his scissors to give you the look you want. No matter the outcome, you'll certainly enjoy difference.
Carrie Bradshaw says your thirties are to learn the lessons and forties are to pay for the drinks. Haha! I suppose having this realization kicking in, in my twenties means I've got a bit of a headstart?
