A Hundred Years of Wonder- 3

Back after an exhausting weekend. I need to complete this list. Here's the rest of my favourite Hindi movies, the 80s upto now.

1. Chashme Baddoor
You'd have to be a real dum-dum to dislike this movie.

2. Kalyug
A modern day rendition of the Mahabharat, an engrossing watch.

3. Angoor
Another 'Nana'r pikchur'. The best take on Shakespeare's Comedy of Errors. Have to single out the  bedroom scene with Sanjeev Kumar and Moushumi Chatterjee as one of the best written situational comedy scenes ever.

4. Satte Pe Satta
I'm not too fond of this movie but remains my favourite only for the one scene that has Hema Malini givign Amitabh Bachchan a fierce dressing down. Nana's work featured here too.

5. Saath Saath
Deepti Naval and Farooque Sheikh's frothy chemistry and some of the best ghazals ever.

6. Masoom
'Man Woman and Child' told with a lot of heart, maturity and practicality. Also, Shekhar Kapoor's first directorial project.

7. Katha
When Naseeruddin Shah, Farooque Sheikh, Deepti Naval and Sai Paranjpe come together, it's always a treat!

8. Rang Birangi
An out-and-out comedy. And Nana was the Art Director here as well.

9. Biwi O Biwi
A crazy, CRAZY comedy film that's a must watch

10. Chameli Ki Shaadi
Hehe, this one is total timepass!

11. Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak
C'mon, an entire generation loved this movie.

12. Maine Pyaar Kiya
In conscious memory, I think this was the first blockbuster I watched.

13. Dil Hai Ki Manta Nahin
Chori Chori, 90s style and Pooja Bhatt's hair.

14. Andaz Apna Apna
Surprisingly, a flop. But a comedy everyone loves! Crime master GoGo is the most memorable :-p

15.  Lamhe
A woman falling in love with a man who loved her mother. Twisted and romantic and ahead of the times.

16. Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar
What's not to like about this film.

17. Roja
The Hindi film industry woke up to Mani Ratnam. Wonderful cinematography, excellent script. And A.R. Rahman arrives.

18. Kabhi Haan Kabhi Na
One of those movies in which the hero does not get the girl. It's a sweet next door love story.

19. Sardar

This movie deserved more attention. Paresh Rawal is such a convincing actor.

20. Shatranj Ke Khiladi
Satyajit Ray's only Hindi outing. And the Master's strokes show.

21. Hum Aapke Hain Kaun
Good, clean family feel-good film that set the benchmark for big budget family entertainers. It put an end to an era of violent no brainers and threw open the floor for movies like DDLJ, KKHH, and K3G.

22. Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge
This movie hurled the lead pairs' chemistry onscreen in a way that no actor has been able to match to date.

23. Sardari Begum
24. Mammo

25. Zubeidaa
The Khalid Mohammad- Shyam Benegal combination shines through in these three films- each connected to the other in some way. Beautiful story-telling.

26. Saaz
Another one by Sai Paranjpe, supposedly inspired by Lata Mangeshkar and Asha Bhonsle.

27. Sarfarosh
There are only two Hindi action movies that I like- Sarfarosh and,

28. Company

29. Astitva

Minus Tabu (overrated) the movie is very watchable. the narration is engaging.

30. Lagaan
The sheer scale of the movie makes it awesome!

31. Dil Chahta Hai
Hindi film industry finally grows up with sync sound, natural acting in a commercial movie, intelligent quips and the importance of HAIR!

32. Saathiya
Another nice romance film. Mumbai local trains make an important guest appearance.

33. Munnabhai MMBS

34. Lage Raho Munnabhai
Both the movies are endearing. Jaadu ki jhappi is part of everyday lingo now.

35. Yuva
Mani Ratnam and an awesome ensemble cast!

36. Jhankaar Beats

The Boss makes a comeback!

37. Life in a Metro
Nine people, one tough city= one cool film

38. Swades
The only movie that makes me like Shahrukh Khan.

39. Main Meri Patni Aur Woh
Bollywood recognizes the emerging small town India.

40. Khosla Ka Ghosla
Clever.

41. Rang De Basanti
Because of its cult status, it was sort of a youth anthem at the time.

42. Dor
An honest, simple, heartfelt movie.

43. Just Married
Pluck out the lead actors and you've got a good movie.

44. Taare Zameen Par
Thank you for introducing dyslexia to the general Indian public.

45. Chak De! India
Who can forget the fantastic make bashing scene by the female hockey squad. Yet to meet a woman who didn't love this movie.

46. Bheja Fry
Ayega-ayega gaane mein 'ayega' kitni baar aata hai?

47. Gandhi, My Father

Gandhi from another perspective.

48. Jab We Met
Jibber jabber fest. Same old wine in a sparkling new bottle.

49. Wake Up Sid
It's fresh.

50. 3 Idiots
Fultoo Bollywood entertainer.

51. Kathik Calling Karthik
Quite a thriller.

52. Kahaani
Super thriller starring Beed-da Balan.

54. Well Done Abba!
A nice satire.

55. Phas Gaya Re Obama
Small budget clever movie.

56. Do Dooni Chaar

The promotion from a two-wheeler vehicle to a four wheeler for the average middle class Indian family.

57. Delhi Belly
A fun, freaky adult comedy.

58. Chalo Dilli
Another one of those small budget clever movies.

59. Barfi!
A serious subject, a lighthearted narration and some whimsical songs.

60. Talaash
Eerie, supernatural thriller.

  1. A lot of the first part of this list is what was known as experimental cinema which got a boost in the eighties. They had a smaller audience and were known as art films and later as parallel cinema. In the nineties, public got tired of the same plots with separated families and illogical stories, which paved the way for more meaningful stories. The glamour quotient increased and was more in tune with the times when a village belle no longer dressed in half ghagras and strange jewellery but wore sarees and that too in the more popular style. Set designing took an northward leap and technicians were again getting to be more valuable after a lull in the Eighties when films were mostly shot in flats and bungalows. Therafter production design was given equal importance. Of course, copying or getting "inspired" by films made in Hollywood or in other Indian languages also brought down creativity in terms of story line and music.
