Which is your favourite social media platform?
Mine has to be Instagram! I find Facebook to be a burdensome obligation off late. It doesn't feel too different from those irritating television 'news' debates. Everyone is screaming away, or in this case, furiously sharing adulterated facts. Even without the sound, Facebook feels noisy.
It has been a conscious decision to share very selectively. Yes, there is unrest in many parts of the world. There is bloodshed, violence, skewed media perspectives, fake news items, politically motivated decisions. And I think social media is one of the biggest culprits of hatemongering.
A burden, a hindrance. It's shocking to read the arguments that ensue, the language that is used, the friendships that often turn sour, all because you may have a different opinion. Quite an un-social platform really. I'll take those cat videos any day!
Voices of women, environmental issues (I honestly think people need to invest more energy to address this mounting global concern than anything else right now), stories of joy, hope and positivity, positive action- that's where I choose to focus my energy. Posts that fan hatred of any sort cannot have space on my newsfeed. Because unless the shared posts lead to positive concrete action, all it does is add to the chaos. Absolutely unproductive and uninspiring.
Do I like Twitter? One look at my blog will tell you that 150 characters just doesn't cut it for me!
But I enjoy Instagram. Sure people are going nuts trying to capture the perfect shot, filling up their gallery with countless pouts so they can post the best one, and then wait anxiously for those likes and comments to pour in. But the nature of the medium forces you to look for the best even in a sea of rubbish. And that's what draws me to it. I like to walk on the sunny side of the street and Instagram pushes you to do that in its own twisted way. Of course, it does push for a version of perfection that's unreal. Even makes you feel inadequate at times. But in a sea of noisy social media platforms, at least Instagram adds to a little beauty in life. Right now, I'm totally addicted to my Insta account for books. Just the joy of reading and sharing bookish thoughts with others like myself add a spot of brightness to my day.
